Anne Arundel County Police collected about 238 pounds of various prescription drugs during Saturday's Prescription Drug Take Back initiative, the department said Monday.
The initiative was meant to collect as much expired and unused medication as possible so that it could be properly discarded, avoiding the potential for the drugs to become safety hazards as they could be abused, misused, or affect water or septic systems through contamination.
The event, part of a national campaign, was sponsored by the police department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA will handle proper disposal.
Residents who still have medications they wish to dispose of can do so at drop boxes found in the lobby of each of the four police districts, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A dropbox can also be found in the lobby of Police Headquarters from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
