Six adults and two children are now homeless after a fire ripped through their townhome on the Fourth of July.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 1600 block of Wood Tree Court East after multiple people called 911 saying the back deck of a home was on fire, and it was extending into the house. Crews were assessing the fire and had to call for additional help, bringing an additional 60 firefighters to the scene.
In the back of the home, crews saw heavy fire conditions that were spreading to the two adjacent homes. They were able to extinguish the flames within 45 minutes, but the home was destroyed with damages reaching up to $270,000.
A firefighter from the Naval Academy also had to be taken to the hospital while fighting the blazes, but officials say he is in good condition with symptoms related to heat exhaustion. The homeowner also had minor burns but refused to be taken to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the Red Cross is helping the eight people who have now been displaced.
