An 80-year-old woman was killed when the SUV she was driving failed to yield at an intersection and was struck by a tractor trailer in Gambrills, Anne Arundel County Police said.

Officers were alerted of a crash at the intersection of Crain Highway/MD-3 and Annapolis Road/MD-175 at about 1:19 p.m. Monday.

Mary Grillo, of the 2200 block of Autumn Valley Circle in Gambrills, was driving her 2005 Honda Element east on Annapolis Road, when she entered the intersection while facing a red light, police said. At the same time, a 2013 Freightliner tractor trailer driven by 28-year-old Tramaine Thompson, of the 300 block of Nowell Farm in Colerain, N.C., was heading south on Crain Highway. Thompson’s truck struck Grillo’s Honda as it entered the intersection.

Grillo was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Thompson was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators believe the cause of the crash was Grillo’s failure to yield right of way in the intersection, police said. Speeding or alcohol use were not likely factors in the crash. The Traffic Safety Section of the Anne Arundel County Police are handling the investigation. They will pass along their findings to the State’s Attorney’s office for review.
