The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club is in Florence, Italy this week.
WMAR- 2 Anchor Jamie Costello first met this special team years ago and fell in love with their spirit for life ever since. From sitting on the side of a hospital bed with waves of terrible thoughts crashing against their world, they are now clubbing creek water off the side of a boat to prove to the same world they are survivors.
Twenty paddlers never thought they’d be in this boat. They share breast cancer in common.
One mouth lead to another word of mouth and suddenly they’re on the mouth of the bay in a Dragon Boat Club.
Its therapeutic in getting the muscles torn down by medicine back up and running. In a sport that beats to a different drummer, this is a way of life. But nobody on this journey thought their next port of call would be Florence, Italy.
The big boat event begins on Friday.
