MILLERSVILLE, md. — Firefighters put out a smoldering fire in an Anne Arundel County Post Office early Thursday morning.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to the Riviera Beach Post Office, at 8480 Rugby Road, at about 6 a.m. after a passerby called 911 following seeing smoke coming from the front door of the building.

Firefighters arrived to see smoke coming from the front of the building and from the chimney area at the building’s rear. Firefighters forced their way into the building and found more heavy smoke inside. They quickly found a fire smoldering in one room of the post office and extinguished it in about 10 minutes. They then took additional time to try to clear the building of smoke. The fire was considered a one-alarm blaze, responded to by 40 firefighters.

The fire is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit.
