CRAB provides thrill of sailing to those with special needs

For nearly three decades, a nonprofit has worked to make sure everyone can feel the thrill of sailing. The Chesapeake Region Accessible Boatingorganization, also known as CRAB, is dedicated to helping those with disabilities learn how to sail.

“I think it’s a great idea to have a program to be out sailing,” said Susie Diffenderffer. “It teaches you a lot of skills”

Diffenderffer has Down syndrome. A genetic disorder that limits her in some capacities. But thanks to the CRAB organization, she still gets to go out into the water and set sail.

CRAB works with those with disabilities as well as recovering warriors and at-risk youths. It provides an opportunity for those who would not otherwise have the chance to learn how to sail.

“They have challenges that keep them from being able to get on any boat in Annapolis,” said Paul Bollinger, the Executive Director for CRAB. “But with us, anyone regardless of their impediment is able to get on our boats and go sailing”.

Over the years, the nonprofit based at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, helps nearly 1,000 people every year. Most of their staff members are volunteers and people within the community wanting to give back.

“It just made me want to tear up and be thankful for how great we’ve been able to make a person feel that didn’t feel that way before,” said Bollinger.

Many guests leaving their challenges at the dock and setting sail on new adventures out at sea.

CRAB has seen a lot of success over the year, but they are always looking for ways to expand. The organization relies on donors, sponsors and grants to support its programs and operations. Organizers say they are hoping for support from the state, county and city of Annapolis to help them provide services to even more people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to sail.

“This is going to take a coordinated effort with the state, the county and the city to pull together and take the support that they have for CRAB and make it a commitment that we actually build this center,” said Bollinger. “There would be no limit to an individual that wants to go boating”
