MILLERSVILLE, Md. — In an effort to open up shelter space for the influx of kittens and strays that occurs most summers, Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control is offering free adoption for all of its senior cats, the organization announced Tuesday.

“Too old to climb on your curtains, but young enough to climb on your lap. What’s not to love?” the agency said in a flyer advertising the give away.

All cats 9 years of age or older are eligible for the free adoption. The goal is to find these cats “a comfortable place to live out their lives, because we know despite our best efforts, we cannot compete with a home,” Animal Care & Control said in a statement. The shelter accepts thousands of animals each year. In 2018, 800 cats were adopted, more than 500 went to rescue partners, and another 100 were reunited with their owners.

While new kittens flood the shelter as births tick up in the spring and summer, senior cats remain the most difficult to rehome, the agency said, as they are often overlooked or considered less desirous than a kitten.

“People adopting a senior pet are truly helping the most needy animals among shelter pets,” Animal Control said in a statement. “The shelter hopes more people will open their hearts and arms to a Senior Cat.”

For more information about the adoption event or to see available cats, go to the Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control website or call 410-222-8900. The agency is located at 411 Maxwell Frye Road in Millersville. The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
