Anne Arundel County Police are warning people to be careful this Independence Day after a man critically injured both of his hands while trying to light fireworks.
Police say the 21-year-old man was at a large party on Tuesday night in the 8300 block of Elvaton Road when he injured both of his hands. Reports indicate that multiple people had brought illegal fireworks from Pennsylvania to the party, which is what the man was using when he hurt himself.
According to investigators, the man was holding a mortar tube in one hand and dropped a lit mortar into the tube with the other hand, but the mortar was upside down. The explosion within the tube caused catastrophic injuries to both of his hands. No other injuries were reported at the party.
This is the second consecutive year that someone has needed hospital treatment from fireworks.
