A man walking in the travel lane of Governor Ritchie Highway died after he was hit by a tractor-trailer Friday morning.
Police say 33-year-old Jacob Lee Jahnigen was walking southbound on Ritchie Highway north of Whites Road when he walked into the travel lane and was hit. Jahnigen was declared dead at the scene and was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Officers say the cause of the crash was Jahnigen failing to use the crosswalk. Neither speed or alcohol use is suspected by the driver.
The Traffic Safety Section is handling the investigation, and any charges need to be reviewed by the State's Attorney.
