After community concerns on the safety of children in the Annapolis area, Mayor Michael Pantelides and Police Chief Scott Baker announced a new speed camera zone near the Phoenix Academy and Germantown Elementary schools.

Officials say that along with the speed camera in the area, signs have been posted to enforce drivers on speeding photos.

The City of Annapolis will issue warning citations for the first 15 days in the new speed camera zone area. Later, violators will be sent $40 fines in the mail.

City officials say they hope to reduce motor vehicle accidents and increase pedestrian safety near schools.
