A 4-year-old and her 51-year-old grandfather died after accidentally drowning at a home in Severna Park.

The 4-year-old girl jumped into a backyard pool at a private residence. Other kids then realized she wasn't able to swim and attempted to reach her, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

The kids notified her grandfather, who also didn't know how to swim. He attempted to rescue the 4-year-old from the side of the pool. After several unsuccessful attempts, he jumped into the pool in an attempt to save her, but started drowning.

The kids ran to get help from another adult.

The 4-year-old's grandmother rushed to the pool to find the two at the bottom of the pool.

They were transported to an area hospital, but paramedics weren't able to revive them.

Police said the owners of the pool allow kids to use it as long as they have adult supervision.

Editor's Note: The 51-year-old man was the girl's grandfather, not uncle as police originally released.
