SEVERNA PARK, Md. — A man was killed Sunday evening after he was struck by a car in Severna Park.

At around 6:10 p.m., officers arrived to northbound Ritchie Highway, immediately south of the intersection of Jones Station Road, for a car crash that involved a pedestrian.

According to reports, a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was approaching the intersection of Jones Station Road, traveling north on Ritchie Highway, when the driver, 21-year-old Madelyn Isaacs, of Arnold, struck the pedestrian.

Officials say the pedestrian, 50-year-old William Smoot, Jr., also of Arnold, was walking east across Ritchie Highway when he crossed into the path of the Jetta. Smoot was wearing a dark overcoat, which made him difficult to see.

He was pronounced dead on the scene and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore for an autopsy. Isaacs remained on the scene.

The preliminary cause of death appears to be Smoot failing to use the crosswalk.

However, the Traffic Safety Section is handling the crash investigation.
