ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WMAR) — Police say a driver struck and seriously injured a 5-year-old before fleeing the scene Saturday night in Annapolis.

It happened around 9:37 p.m. in the unit block of Bunche Street.

The child was crossing the street in a non-intersection when they were hit, according to police.

Detectives believe the crash was likely caused by pedestrian error, but for some reason the driver got out of the car and ran away afterward.

Charges have been filed for the driver who's been identified, but is still at large.

There name will be released once they're served with court papers.

The child was taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center and is expected to survive.

How the child ended up in the road remains under investigation. It's unclear if any guardian was with them at the time.
