TSA demonstrates the proper way to bring a firearm when you fly

You are able to travel with a gun but officials at BWI Airport and the Transportation Security Administration want to remind travelers about the proper way to do so.

The gun must be in a checked bag, not loaded, and packed in a hard-sided case that is locked. Ammunition for that gun must be in its original box and put inside the same case as the gun. Travelers must also declare the gun during the check in process.

Travelers are not permitted to bring a gun in their carry-on luggage.

If you do try to get through a checkpoint with a loaded firearm it'll cost you.

"The TSA can issue a civil citation, typically the first offense for bringing a firearm to a checkpoint is $3900. If you've been arrested you would have your attorneys fee on top of that. So that's going to be a very expensive mistake that can cost you thousands of dollars," said Lisa Farbstein with the TSA.

You could also be arrested and face charges even if you didn't realize you were carrying the gun.

"The best thing to do if you're coming to the airport is empty your carry on bag completely. Start with an empty bag and pack it from scratch," said Farbstein.
