Baltimore's Charm City Games kick off Monday, championship on Saturday

BALTIMORE — The games have begun as Baltimore's first ever Charm City Games are underway.

The Olympic-style event for kids kicked off on Monday with a torch lighting ceremony at Canton Waterfront Park. Kids between 12 and 14 years old will compete all week long in various sports like basketball, track, soccer and tennis.

"This is the true show of young people in Baltimore," said President of Baltimore City Council, Brandon Scott. "The average young person in Baltimore is like these young people-just trying to succeed and thrive in their academics, in their athletics, and whatever they choose to do, and we just have to continue to highlight them just as much as we highlight the few that get in trouble."

The games will be played at various locations throughout the city, with the championship taking place on Saturday.
