Both drivers killed in I-83 wrong-way, head-on crash

BALTIMORE — A wrong-way head-on crash early Monday on I-83 in Baltimore left both drivers dead, Baltimore Police said.

Officers were called to the the southbound lanes of I-83 at the North Avenue exit for a vehicle accident at about 1:45 a.m., police said. There they found two cars, a 2002 Mercedes Benz and a 2013 Infiniti, that had been in a head-on collision.

Police said the driver of the Mercedes, 26-year-old Equanna Duncan, of the 4200 block of Fernihill Avenue, was driving north in the southbound lanes of I-83 when she struck the Infiniti that was heading south in the correct lanes.

Both drivers were pulled from their cars by witnesses and taken to local hospitals where they were both pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Infiniti was identified as 51-year-old Walter Dunbar, of the 2900 block of Independence Street in Better Waverly.

The Baltimore Police Department’s Crash Team unit is investigating the incident.
