BALTIMORE — No Hooks Before Books is the motto at a West Baltimore boxing gym.

Umar Boxing owner, Marvin McDowell held the ninth annual 'Boxing for Books’ fundraiser to raise awareness and money for his youth program.

McDowell teaches kids the art of boxing, but they must finish their homework before they touch any gloves.

He says the program helps increase their confidence and increases the number of youths who seek higher education.

"A lot of people don't associate boxing and thinking, but to be a good boxer you have to be a good thinker. Like playing chess you now making the first move, having a strategy," said McDowell.

Since 'Boxing for Books' started, it has helped raise about 30 percent of the program's annual budget.
