The former defense attorney for one of the officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray announced he's exploring a bid for public office in 2018.

In a letter to friends and family Ivan Bates says he's been encouraged to run for public office.

"We need to make changes to restore the public’s trust in how we successfully prosecute crime. Therefore, with the support of my family, I have decided to take the next steps in preparation for seeking elected office in 2018."

Bates is a defense attorney and former prosecutor. He said he wants to take a team effort for Baltimore City to "repair its image and restore the public's trust."

Last year, Bate's represented Sgt. Alicia White who was charged in the death of Freddie Gray.
