Hurricane impacts Amtrak, MARC, VRE schedules

Even though Hurricane Florence's strength and trajectory have been revised, the storm is still affecting local rail service.

Amtrak has announced service and schedule changes and cancelations that affect trains up and down the Eastern Seaboard, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 12 and lasting through Sunday, Sept. 16.

Since Amtrak equipment that would normally be in service will occupy space at Union Station in Washington D.C., local rail services will be affected as well.

Maryland Area Regional Commuter train service said trains arriving and departing from Union Station will experience delays Thursday, Sept. 13, but MARC will continue to run a full service schedule.

Officials said a decision regarding the "reduction or curtailment" of MARC service Friday will be made "when a clear picture of the potential impact on the area becomes available," the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration said.

Passengers can follow MARC's Train Advisorywebsite or MTA social media accounts for updated information on service changes.

Virginia Railway express announced scheduling issues affecting their D.C.-area service, as well.
