Alanna Shanahan was announced as the new director of athletics and recreation at Johns Hopkins University. She will assume her new role July 18, 2016.

University president Ronald J. Daniels made the announcement Monday.

“Alanna clearly has the passion, energy and vision needed to direct Hopkins athletics,” Daniels said in a statement. “Her experience at Penn working with an outstanding university and its motivated, high-achieving student-athletes will serve her extremely well as the leader of the Johns Hopkins Department of Athletics and Recreation. She arrives during the most successful era in Hopkins athletics history, and we look forward to watching our student-athletes continue to flourish academically and athletically under her direction.”

Shanahan has served as the deputy director of athletics and senior woman's administrator at the University of Pennsylvania since 2012. She has been a member of Penn's staff since 1999.

“I would like to thank President Daniels, Kevin Shollenberger, Daniel Ennis and the search committee for providing me with this incredible opportunity,” Shanahan said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to begin my work at Johns Hopkins, one of the country’s outstanding academic institutions; one that has also enjoyed great success in both Division I and Division III athletics. I look forward to working with the student-athletes, coaches, University leaders and alumni to continue Johns Hopkins’ tradition of excellence, both on and off the field.”

Shanahan becomes just the fourth director of athletics and recreation at Johns Hopkins since 1950. She succeeds Tom Calder who's been in the role since 1955. Calder will be the director of alumni programs at the university beginning July 1, 2016.
