LEVINDALE, Md. — He's been volunteering at a nursing home for nearly 25 years, but now Bernie the Candyman is retiring.

On Wednesday morning, there was a retirement party for the 91-year-old. He volunteered at the Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital in Baltimore where he would push his candy cart around the facility, selling treats and other snacks to staff, residents and patients.

The proceeds went to the activity fund for residents.

Staff say that they looked forward to Bernie's weekly visits because he brightened their day and knew everyone's favorite treats.

"I just enjoyed doing everything. I wasn't forced to do it, I wanted to do it," said Bernie. "There were times I couldn't wait to get into Levindale to start my rounds and it was just tone of those happy things that I enjoyed."

Bernie is retiring from his volunteer job to move closer to his family in the DC area.
