BALTIMORE — A local professor is honored by Essence Magazine, Dr. Kaye Whitehead is an Associate Professor of Communication and African American Studies at Loyola University of Maryland.

She is one of the magazine's "woke 100 women for 2019".

The list honors black women who are agents for change in their communities and around the country.

The university celebrated the professor with cupcakes in the quad on Wednesday.

Dr. Whitehead said she didn't even know she was going to be on the list.

"I looked twice, and I screamed in the airport, then I started crying. People who see me and see my work. I've always dreamed of being in Essence Magazine." said Dr. Whitehead.

She was named alongside First Lady Michelle Obama, Filmmaker Ava Duvernay, Olympic Gymnast Simone Biles and U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Whitehead was the only person selected who works in Maryland and she is the only person from Baltimore on the list.
