Mayor responds after President Trump denounces officials who took down monuments

Posted

President Trump denounced city officials across the country for taking down Confederate statues.

Last week, he tweeted he was sad to see the monuments removed. He said the history and culture of the country was being ripped apart.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh responded Wednesday morning at a school ribbon cutting ceremony that the president is divisive and caused riots Tuesday night in Phoenix just by speaking.

"I would hope that as he reviews his remarks, that he understands that that's not the way to win," Pugh said. "That winning means bringing people together, that's my intent as mayor of this city."

The mayor said she was praying for Trump, saying love is the answer and not disrespect.

She had the city's four Confederate monuments removed overnight last week. The city is still deciding what to do with them.
