BALTIMORE — September is National Preparedness Month.

On Thursday, The Housing Authority of Baltimore City hosted its Annual Prepare-A-Thon Kick Off to promote family and community disaster planning.

"We really want people to put together a family plan that is customized to their particular family. We're giving out starter kits to help them get started and we have plan 9, the plan 9 is 9 essentials things that belong in an emergency kit."

Those nine things are: at least one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, at least a three day supply of non-perishable food, at least one complete change of clothes and shoes, an extra supply of any medicine you take, a flashlight or lantern not candles, a manual can opener, a battery powered radio, hygiene items and a first aid kit.

The Housing Authority will hold events throughout the month to help residents become better prepared.
