BALTIMORE — Controversial statues across the country have been taken down in recent days and now there's controversy over two statues here in Baltimore.
A George Washington statue was covered in paint and city council members are debating if the city's Columbus monument should be renamed.
There's a proposal to have it rededicated to the victims of police brutality.
Councilman Ryan Dorsey is in favor of the change.
“We cannot pass laws on our police department in general here at the local level. There is little that we can do. For instance if we wanted to we could not pass laws prohibiting certain types of chokeholds, prohibiting the use of rubber bullets which are just bullets covered with rubber. We could not at the local level pass a law banning no knock warrants.”
Dorsey introduced a bill about the potential change tonight. It's been assigned to the Lifestyles and Urban Affairs Committee.
