BALTIMORE — Restaurants in Fells Point are working to expand their outdoor seating, that includes what some restaurants are calling parklet seating.
Restaurants are starting to use parking spaces to expand their outdoor dining. The idea is to use reclaimed items to create a fenced in area along with shrubbery.
Main street is currently working with 23 other restaurants in the area to get a permit from the city for similar parklets.
Kooper’s Tavern says this outdoor space will help with sales and social distancing while eating out.
"If you go anywhere to any country in the world, you find cobblestone streets and Victorian buildings, this is what you’ll find. I’ve been to Italy, Scotland and Ireland and everyone of those countries have this. You go to Canada everybody’s got a parklet. So yeah, this is the future right now. We’re going to test pilot it out, see how it works and I think people will be happy with it."
Fells Point plans to build more parklets next week and is hoping to have them fully operational by July 1.
