Smoke caused by an electric issue in downtown Baltimore contributed to evening traffic in Baltimore.

Baltimore Fire Department responded to the scene, of the William Donald Schaefer building on St. Paul Street for a reported underground smoke coming from a manhole cover.

When fire crews arrived there was no smoke coming from the manhole and BGE crews responded to the scene to handle the issue.

The building was closed early and evacuation was conducted by the Baltimore Police Department.

An area of the city already prone to gridlock, the smoke is exacerbating evening drives. The Orioles host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at 7:05 p.m. as well, increasing traffic in the Inner Harbor. 

Road closures are on Fayette between Calvert and St. Paul Street.

As of 7:30 pm, BGE remains on the scene to ensure safety precautions and the extent of road closures depends on what their crews find.
