The Department of Public Works is working to fix a 10 inch main on Charles Street. The water main ruptured during rush hour and caused major traffic delays in the Mt. Vernon area.
Crews shut off the water and believe the water outage is limited to the 1300 block of North Charles Street.
Miss Utility is on scene marking off buried utilities so that when crews dig to repair the broken main, they won't dig up other utilities.
The Department of Public Works advises drivers to avoid Charles and Preston streets and find alternate routes to leave downtown.
North Charles Street is closed between Preston Street and Mount Royal Avenue.
