Who is Catherine Pugh?

Baltimore's next mayor, Catherine Pugh, has a long history of public service. 

The Norristown, Pa. native, 66, was elected to the state Senate a decade ago, after serving two years in the House of Delegates. Prior to that, she served on the Baltimore City Council, representing District 4, from 1999 through 2004. 

Pugh served as the Senate's Majority Leader from 2015-2016, after serving as deputy majority whip from 2008-2011 and deputy majority leader from 2011-2014. This year, Pugh was president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. 

The graduate of Morgan State University has a background in communications, having founded the public relations consulting firm Pugh and Company in 1988. In 1994, Pugh was host of Another View on Philadelphia's WTGW-TV.

She is also the founder and former managing editor of Baltimore's African American News and the former dean and director of Strayer Business College.

Pugh is also the author of Mind Garden: Where Thoughts Grow and Healthy Holly, a children’s book series advocating exercise and healthy eating.
