Search continues for driver who hit and killed 12-year-old girl

CATONSVILLE — Baltimore County Police released a picture of the 12-year-old girl hit and killed in Catonsville last month. The driver who hit her and her pregnant aunt still hasn't been found.

Maria Popal turned twelve just a month before she died. Her pregnant aunt was also hit and continues to recover from her injuries. She was released from the hospital.

The crash happened on Friday, March 22 while the pair was crossing North Rolling Road.

Police believe the suspect vehicle is a 1990 - 1993 Honda Accord with a black stripe or trim across the doors. Police released surveillance video of the car that was seen driving away from the scene of the crash.

Maria Popal was getting ready to enroll in 5th grade as she had just returned home after spending time with family in Afghanistan. She was the oldest child in her family and left behind two brothers. Baltimore County Police in a release said Maria loved math and was one of the highest rated students in her previous elementary school. She also loved art, flowers and riding her bike.
