WINDSOR MILL, Md. — A senior citizen died after being pulled from a house fire Monday afternoon in Windsor Mill.

Baltimore County Fire crews battled heavy smoke coming from a home in the 2800 block of Ridge Road.

While fighting the flames, crews pulled Ronald Eugene Wallace, 71, from the front of the burning home. He later died at an area hospital.

A large portion of the floor collapsed into the basement forcing firefighters to evacuate the home.

“Crews made their way out and they were ordered not to go back in the basement until that was cleared up,” said Baltimore County Fire Spokesman Nick Tyson. "Once they were able to knock a little bit of the fire down, they tried to go back in but because of weak floors and material inside they ordered another evacuation and decided to fight the fire in defensive mode."

Additional fire engines had to be called to provide water because the area had no hydrants, making the fire fight even more difficult.

It's unclear at this point what started the fire and the extent of damage caused.
