Carroll County Public Schools will resume field trips to Baltimore next year.

The school system put restrictions on trips to Baltimore last month based on the recommendation of the Carroll County Sheriff and worries about the security and safety of students.

Today, Superintendent Stephen Guthrie announced the system will lift that temporary restriction as of January 2 after he and Sheriff James DeWees developed new guidelines.

"I am very grateful to Sheriff Jim DeWees," said Guthrie. "He has played an integral role in helping us review and modify our field trip procedures and has been actively communicating with Baltimore City officials to gain a better understanding of their plans to improve public safety in high tourist areas."

Part of the changes in field trip guidelines include tighter communication between teachers, chaperones and bus drivers and less unstructured time.

The school system posted the modified guidelines on the CCPS website.
