FINKSBURG, Md. — One person is dead after driving their car into an AT&T building Monday evening.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, around 7:30 p.m. deputies and Maryland State Police Troopers were conducting an unrelated traffic stop when they witnessed a crash on westbound Route 140 and Suffolk Road.

Deputies say they saw a black Hyundai driving westbound on Route 140 try to turn left from the far right lane onto Green Mill Road. That Hyundai hit a Chrysler that was traveling in the same direction but in the left lane. The Hyundai then spun around and after coming to a rest at the intersection, it sped up towards Suffolk road, left the roadway, traveled through a grassy field, and struck an AT&T building.

Deputies responded to the car and found that the engine compartment had caught on fire, so they pulled the driver from the car and attempted life-saving measures while extinguishing it.

The driver, an 83-year-old man, was later pronounced dead by EMS personnel. His cause of death is still under investigation.

The driver of the Chrysler was not injured and was able to drive away from the scene.
