RISING SUN, Md. — Maryland State Police is investigating a deadly crash after a 68-year-old man drove off Joseph Biggs Highway and hit a tree head-on in Rising Sun.

On Saturday at about 11:15 a.m., troopers from the North East Barrack responded to the 1100 block of MD 276 (Joseph Biggs Highway) in Rising Sun for a report of a single vehicle crash.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a beige Ford F-350 had hit a tree in the front yard of a home.

The driver of the Ford was identified as 68-year-old James Shephard, of Conowingo, and the sole passenger was identified as 67-year-old Margaret Shephard, also of Conowingo.

James and Margaret Shephard were taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware for treatment of their injuries. James Shephard pronounced dead by doctors at Christiana Hospital late Saturday afternoon.

Margaret remains under the care of Christiana Hospital.

The preliminary investigation showed the F-350 had been traveling eastbound on Joseph Biggs Highway in the 1100 block, when for an unknown reason it drove off the roadway, traveled across a residential driveway and then collided head-on into a tree.

An Advanced Collision Investigator assigned to the North East Barrack is handling the investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the North East Barrack at 410-996-7800, reference case #20-MSP-008674.
