An adult victim was found dead inside a home after firefighters put out a two-alarm fire in Rising Sun, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said Friday.

The Cecil County Department of Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a fire at 13 Mason Dixon Court. Roughly 50 fire fighting personnel from Cecil County and Pennsylvania responded, controlling the fire in about 40 minutes, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said. Once the flames were out, firefighters entered the home and found the deceased victim.

The victim was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine identification and the exact cause of death. The Office of the State Fire Marshal would not confirm the approximate age or sex of the victim.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation, the Fire Marshal said. Total damages are estimated at about $125,000, and due to the “extreme amount of damage” investigators could not determine if the house had working smoke alarms.

A death investigation is being conducted by the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available, the Office of the State Fire Marshall said
