Posted

Two people, an 18-year-old boy and a 57-year-old man, died after drowning while swimming at Assateague Island on Sunday.

Maryland Natural Resources Police say the first drowning happened around noon while a group from Virginia were swimming in the ocean off of the campgrounds. They say a 57-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl from the same group were transported to Atlantic General Hospital after being sucked in by the riptide.

The teenage girl was treated and released from the hospital but the man did not make it. Police say he was from Chantilly, Virginia.

Then around 5:43 p.m., an 18-year-old boy from the Pittsburg area of Pennsylvania also drowned around the same area because of the riptides. He was also taken to Atlantic General Hospital where he later died.

Police say there were reports of other non-fatal drownings, but they did not have additional details.
