COLUMBIA, Md. — Girls on the Run of Central Maryland held their third annual Sneaker Soiree fundraiser on Thursday.

The money helps girls who's families can't afford to enroll them in the youth program. The program is a non-profit which teaches girls in elementary and middle school confidence, the importance of teamwork and other life skills through running.

"We teach them not to listen to rumors or start rumors the goal is to eliminate that mean girl behavior as well as boost their self esteem at a time when many girls' self esteem start to drop," said Executive Director of the program Jessamine Duvall.

Each year, girls on the run provides more than $70,000 in scholarships. They also use some of the money to give sneakers to the girls receiving financial aid.
