Sheppard Pratt Health System broke ground on its newest campus Thursday.

A ceremony was held to celebrate the start of construction for the 40-acre state-of-the-art hospital campus in Howard County.

The campus will include an 85-bed, 156,000-square-foot hospital with inpatient, partial hospital and crisis services. There will also be a 76,000-square-foot medical office building and two building pads for future expansion.

"Howard County is the best place to live in America but we also have problems with folks suffering with behavioral health and opioid crisis and substance misuse disorder,” said County Executive Allan Kittleman. “We need to make sure that we have the facilities available for those individuals.”

The hospital is expected to open in 2020, will provide access to a crisis walk-in clinic with same-day access for urgent assessments.

The medical office building will include outpatient and integrated behavioral health services, as well as other mental health and support services.
