Two men will serve as acting police chief for the month of January in Howard County.
Major Luther Johnson is currently serving in the role right now through January 13. Johnson is the department's deputy chief of administration.
Then, Major Ellsworth Jones takes over through January 31. Jones is the deputy chief of operations for the police department.
Both men joined the department in 1989.
Former Howard County police chief Gary Gardner retired on New Year's Eve after 35 years with the department.
No word on a timetable to find a permanent replacement.
