Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that took the life of a woman on eastbound I-70 Friday evening in Howard County.

Troopers were called to the scene just before 6:45 p.m. on I-70 in the Mount Airy area when a driver traveling east on the interstate crashed into the guard wires in the median.

Investigators say the female driver then got out of her Volvo through the passenger side and tried to cross eastbound I-70 when another car struck her.

Howard County Department of Fire Rescue pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

The crash caused some lane closures on the interstate.

Officials are investigating the incident.
