Authorities say a driver slammed into a Maryland State Police cruiser while a trooper was conducting a traffic stop.

Local media outlets report that the trooper was not in the cruiser when it was hit Saturday on I-270 in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer says that after the car hit the cruiser, it rolled on its side and caught fire. Police have identified the driver as 29-year-old Stephen Michael Shannon.

Police say the trooper had to break the window of Shannon's car to pull him out. Shannon was taken to the hospital with injuries that are thought to be non-life-threatening.

Police say charges are pending against Shannon. Police say they believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
