Comptroller Peter Franchot announced on Friday that he is halting returns from 20 more tax preparers.
According to his office, the suspensions were due to a high volume of questionable tax returns received.

These 20 businesses are now added to the already 14 preparers that have been flagged since tax season began in January.
"My entire agency is on a mission to protect Marylanders and identify shady tax preparers who are trying to steal money from hardworking taxpayers," Comptroller Franchot said. "My Questionable Returns Detection Team is dedicated to putting an end to unscrupulous tax preparers who knowingly submit false tax returns for their own gain. I applaud my team's vigilance to safeguard taxpayers."

In 2016 and 2017, the Comptroller's Office blocked suspicious tax returns at 95 tax preparation businesses in 113 locations.
