Fallen Heroes Day recognized across Maryland

In the wake of a police officer being shot in Parkville Thursday and the successful conviction of a teen who struck and killed another officer who worked in the same precinct the year prior, deaths in the line of duty have a particular relevancy in the Baltimore area and statewide.

Such exemplars of public service will be celebrated today in ceremonies across Maryland as part of Fallen Heroes Day. The day is the only such statewide observance recognizing public safety professionals and volunteers who dedicate their lives, sometimes paying the ultimate cost, to helping and protecting others. Salutes to correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical and rescue personnel, and police will take place across the Free State during the 34th anniversary of this event Friday.
