ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A new heated walkway is being installed at the Maryland governor's mansion.
Doug Mayer, a spokesman for Gov. Larry Hogan, said Thursday the old walk needed to be replaced due to safety concerns. He says snow-melting cables were added to save money in the long term, because snow won't have to be shoveled. He didn't have an exact cost estimate, but he says it's under $100,000.
Mayer adds that the decision was made by a department in the administration and that the governor was not aware of it.
Landscaping has been a point of contention between the Republican governor and leadership in the Democrat-led legislature. House Speaker Michael Busch noted last year that the grounds of Maryland's statehouse, a National Historic Landmark, looked shabby in comparison to the governor's mansion.
