The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is offering new correctional officers a $5,000 incentive to join the department.

Secretary Stephen T. Moyer will announced the incentives program on Thursday in the Jail Industries building at 11:00 in the morning.

Recruits will receive $2,000 for completing officer training academy, and an additional $3,000 after completing a one-year probationary period.

The department already offers $500 to officers who refer successful candidates.

In addition, the department has been shutting down other facilities and transferring hundreds of officers to where they are most needed.

Over the past two years, the Baltimore City Detention Center, and the Jail Industries Building in Baltimore have closed.

Officials hope the incentives will help ease under staffing woes.
