Police say a man was erroneously crossing the road when he was hit and killed by a car in Maryland City on Thursday.

65-year-old Arnold Wilfred Mumford was crossing Laurel Ft Meade Road near Laureldale Drive when an Acura, driven by James Seach, hit him.

Police say Mumford entered the road into traffic while trying to cross, but Seach did not see him in time to stop. Seach did stop immediately after hitting him and called 911.

Mumford was declared dead at the scene and was taken to the Office of the Cheif Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. Seach was not injured during the crash.

Preliminary investigations indicate it was Mumford's error which caused the crash. The Traffic Safety Section is handling the investigation and any charges will be after review by the States Attorney.
