CUMBERLAND, Md. — An investigation is underway following the death of a state prison inmate.
Maryland State Police say it happened around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday while a correctional officer was conducting cell checks at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland.
During his check, the correctional officer noticed an altercation going on between cellmates. One of the inmates, identified as 30-year-old Wilbur Moyer II required immediate medical attention, while a second unidentified prisoner was taken into custody.
Medical staff transported Moyer to Western Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Maryland State Police detectives are continuing to investigate by interviewing inmates and prisoner personnel.
Moyer's body is expected to undergo an autopsy, at which time the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will determine the cause of death.
