Middle school teacher attempts to flee country, charged with crimes against child

FAIRFAX, Va. — A Maryland man was arrested in El Paso, Texas on Friday after he was reportedly attempting to flee the country.

According to Fairfax County Police, 31-year-old Matthew Snell a Thoreau Middle School teacher, faces charges of carnal knowledge of a child and taking indecent liberties with a child by person in custodial relationship.

On Thursday, parents found inappropriate text messages from Snell to a teen and reported it to the school. Detectives quickly worked to corroborate the information and Snell became aware of the investigation and fled the jurisdiction as arrest warrants were obtained.

Snell was tracked to the El Paso International Airport where he was safely taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service.
