A grand jury subpoena allowing police and prosecutors access to the names, addresses and contact information of public housing residents in Maryland's capital was withdrawn after it was challenged over privacy and constitutionality concerns.
The Capital reports the legal counsel for the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis, Robert Miller, filed a motion to quash the subpoena Oct. 7, arguing it was too broad. The subpoena asked for residents' information for an indefinite period of time to "facilitate investigations of violent crimes" on certain housing authority properties.
The American Civil Liberties Union condemned the subpoena Wednesday, saying authorities misrepresented their motives, a characterization State's Attorney Wes Adams' office disputes.
Housing authority employees had shared information since at least 2009, and last shared a roster in April 2016.
