Police and fire officials say an Amtrak train struck and killed a teenage boy who was on the tracks in Maryland north of Washington. Rail service was halted in the area.
Montgomery County Police say the youth was hit about 4:45 p.m. Monday in Boyds, a town about 20 miles north of the nation's capital.
Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, tweeted that six bystanders were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. He said none on the train were hurt.

A police spokesman did not know why the teenager was on the tracks.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari tells The Washington Post that the train, carrying some 200 passengers, was traveling from Washington to Chicago.
All rail traffic, including Amtrak, CSX and Maryland's commuter line, was halted.
